Twitter has ordered employees around the world to work from home following the COVID-19 pandemic – with Tweeps in Hong Kong, South Korea and Japan already working remotely. The social media company, based in San Fransico, operates more than 35 offices across the globe.
Twitter had already “strongly encouraged” its staff to work from home in an effort to curb the spread of the deadly coronavirus.
“Our top priority remains the health and safety of our Tweeps, and we also have a responsibility to support our communities, those who are vulnerable, and the healthcare providers who are on the front lines of this pandemic,” reads an official statement from Twitter.
“To continue this push, we are moving beyond our earlier guidance of “strongly encouraging work from home” provided on March 2 and have now informed all employees globally they must work from home.”
The social media goliath says that it understands how this could be regarded as an “unprecedented step”, but it’s necessary in these “unprecedented times”. And it wants Tweeps to know that working from home doesn’t change the day-to-day work, it just means employees will be doing it from a different environment.
Twitter is not the only tech company taking precautionary steps to aid employees. According to The Verge, Apple, Microsoft, Google and Amazon have also ordered employees in certain regions to observe similar instructions. However, “Twitter’s order to its entire 4,900-strong global workforce is one of the strongest yet amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic”.
