Twitter CEO and Founder Jack Dorsey will settle in Ghana for six months to help set up the company’s Africa headquarters. The news comes few weeks after Dorsey’s Twitter announced its Africa move.
Twitter is setting up an office in Ghana, its first in Africa, and had already advertised a total of 12 positions across several roles, including product, design, engineering, marketing, and communications.
The news was announced by Ghana’s Minister of Communications and Digitalisation, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, in an interview. Dorsey will stay in Ghana’s capital Accra and will reportedly make the move in the coming weeks.
Owusu-Ekuful also says, Accra “will be his base while he visits the other countries on the continent.” It will be interesting to see which countries Dorsey tours during his lengthy stay, and second visit to Africa.
Jack moving to Africa is not new. He tweeted about moving to Africa for up to six months in mid-2020, in late 2019, although the pandemic made him change plans. At the time, Dorsey had not decided which country will be his home during the stay.
Also, the CEO of Square, Dorsey, came under fire after his Africa move announcement which would place him far away from his duties.
Twitter in Ghana
About the choice of Ghana as its Africa HQ, Twitter said it chose the West African country because it’s a democracy champion and “a supporter of free speech, online freedom, and the Open Internet.” This is an optimistic sentiment about the country with its mixed track record with regulation.
“Today, in line with our growth strategy, we’re excited to announce that we are now actively building a team in Ghana,” Twitter announced in April.
The company’s Africa HQ will begin operations on a remote basis, as the social media company contemplates opening an office in the future.
