Following TikTok’s ban in India together with 58 other Chinese apps over national security concerns, installs of TikTok alternatives have grown massively in the market. Sensor Tower’s Store Intelligence estimates reveal staggering installs of the top three alternatives to TikTok in India.
After three weeks since its ban, first-time installs of Roposo, Zili (developed by Xiaomi), and Dubsmash have grown collectively by 155%. The three have amassed 21.8 million downloads since TikTok’s ban. For the three to capture a good market share, there’s still a long way to go.
Sensor Tower says the three have reached 13 percent of TikTok installs in India as of the first half of 2020. The app had 164.5 million downloads in H1 2020 across Google Play and Apple App Store.
Other TikTok alternatives are also rising but not at a significant rate as Roposo, Zili, and Dubsmash. The market also received new alternatives around the ban’s announcement, according to the research firm.
TikTok Troubles Continue
TikTok, owned by Chinese parent company ByteDance, is facing heightened scrutiny from the US and is facing a potential ban. The US is mulling banning TikTok for fears the app may be used by China to spy on Americans.
In a turnaround of events, a recent report from The Information suggests a group of American investors is considering buying a majority stake in the video-sharing app.
Talks are already undergoing between the investors and regulators to see whether a change in ownership could save TikTok. As we have already learned, to the US government it doesn’t matter if an American CEO runs the company.
