Airtel Africa Celebrates 10th Anniversary, Boasts Of Over 110Million Subscribers in the Region

Airtel Africa is celebrating its 10th anniversary this month. The company which is under Bharti Airtel established its presence in the region after acquiring Zain Telecom’s Africa exactly 10 years ago, in June 2010.

At the time, Zain Telecom’s Africa was operating in 15 countries with a total of 36 million subscribers.

Throughout the 10 years of operating in the region, Airtel Africa has grown its userbase and currently serves slightly over 110 million customers.

Airtel Africa is available in 14 different countries, primarily in East Africa and Central and West Africa. These include Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria, Rwanda, Seychelles, and others.

The company provides voice, data, and mobile money services.

Out of the 110.6m total, Airtel Africa says provides data services to 35.4m customers and mobile money services customers to 18.3m customers. In the recently concluded financial year, the company had a turnover of $3.4 bn(approx. KSh 340bn).

The company’s biggest milestone recently is being listed on the London and Nigerian stock exchanges.

Airtel Kenya

Airtel Africa’s Kenyan subsidiary Airtel Kenya is the second-largest telco locally. The company holds a 14 million user base according to the latest Sector Statistics Report from the Communications Authority of Kenya (CAK).
