You’ve definitely seen the Airdrop icon on your iPhone or iPad. You’ve probably heard a friend offer to Airdrop something to someone else.
But do you actually know what this mysterious sharing feature is? Or are you still stuck in the olden days of texting, emailing, or even Facebook messaging your photos to your friends?
If you’re such a Luddite as that, we’re here to help. Here’s everything you need to know about sharing pictures, documents, and more via Airdrop.
First, you’ll need to turn Airdrop on. To do this, swipe down from the top of your screen to launch Control Center. Press and hold the wireless control box (the button in the upper left corner box that looks like an antenna).
Tap on Airdrop on the menu that appears.
You can then decide whether you’d like to be Airdropped by everyone nearby, or only by contacts.
Now, you can send things to people nearby who also have Airdrop turned on. To do this, open the app that you’d like to share from and select the item you want to share. Tap Share.
A list of available users in your area will appear under the photo. Tap the one you want to share your item with.
Good luck with your new quick-sharing tool. Just, as usual, beware of trolls.
